Weekly Crumbs

Hello hello! I haven’t been doing weekly crumbs lately so we’re back at it! I feel like I come across so many great articles, recipes, tips & tricks throughout my week and I haven’t been sharing them lately, so I am definitely bringing this back moving forward!

The truth is, I have been in a little funk lately where I’ve felt like I’ve had a bit of a creative block. I’ve found myself over the last couple of weeks not reading as much, writing, or taking pictures. Sometimes I will just mindlessly scroll on instagram until I realize I am just completely wasting time. I think sometimes it takes getting out of town, leaving your phones behind, and just getting back to nature!

Driving towards Mount Hood on Friday on the way to a remote campground and seeing the service bars on my phone disappear was the most welcomed feeling ever. I have needed a few days to completely unplug and I couldn’t think of anything better than a camping weekend.

If you’re in the Portland area, we went to Bonney Meadows which is a secluded campground near mount hood. It was so cool turning off the main highway and driving four miles deep into the forest on tight dirt roads until we arrived at our campsite – our friends were already there all set-up with the fire going with beers in hand!

We had our little tent which has treated us well over the last few years! Both couples we were with had roof-top tents that they put on top of their trucks and I’m obsessed! We are definitely going to upgrade and get one of these to put on top of my 4-runner. We were talking about it since we are planning a road trip across the U.S. whenever we move back East, this tent would be perfect if we wanted to stop and camp in Yosemite and the Grand Canyon on our way.

Our first night at the camp Thomas and I made dinner! We had already made a huge pot of my favorite barbacoa and just threw it on the camp stove to reheat. In the meantime we grilled up corn on the cob and made the best Mexican street corn! Barbacoa tacos, guac, and street corn is my kind of camping food!

Things I discovered on this camping trip:

Bumble & bumble dry shampoo is the real MVP when it’s been two days without a shower!
– lemongrass repels mosquitos! We used a spray we got at Fred Meyer, but I am definitely going to make this homemade essential-oil repellent for next time!
– Hiking three miles to a beautiful lake is totally worth it, especially when you pack 10 Barrel Out of Office and Cucumber Crush in your backpacks.
– Our Bose portable speaker is my new favorite travel companion. It’s compact, waterproof, and spitting out the best tunes all weekend long!
– How fun BB guns are! One of our friends brought his old bb rifle and it brought back childhood memories of when I had my first BB gun growing up! We set-up cans and had shooting competition all weekend lol. This is what happens when you have so much time on your hands!
– Our friends threw Trader Joe’s Bool Kogi, which is a Korean marinated beef, on the grill Saturday and it has the best flavor! Definitely worth buying again.
– How cool rooftop tents are! REI is having a 4th of July sale which we are definitely taking advantage of.
– Drinking red wine out of a solo cup isn’t quite as satisfying, but perfectly fitting sitting around the fire.

I totally feel you on the freedom of having no service! We had zero wifi when we went to Eastern Oregon last weekend, and it was so refreshing.

Sounds a great little escape and I agree, we all need to “unplug” every now and then. Getting back to the more human part of human connection becomes more difficult all the time.
